For years people in nursing homes have been victims of abuse, neglect & other forms of maltreatment. While there are many systemic issues that play into the corruption of nursing homes, paying staff minimum wage with low-no benefits has caused a massive staff shortage in facilities.Leaving staff more shorthanded than they are already are by the laws that require minimal staff-to-patient ratios, we are not only hurting nursing home residents, but hurting what good staff members we have. The staffing crisis has lead to burnout, and with minimum pay and minimum benefits there are not many people to chose from when hiring for staff members.
As citizens of a community, it is our job to protect the most vulnerable, including our nursing home residents. Whether you think you will never be in a nursing home, or your loved one will never be in a nursing home, chances are there will be multiple peop威而鋼 le you know with this future. By starting a union, we are protecting residents from repercussions of staff shortages (such as falls, not being assisted while eating, lack of showers, etc) and protecting the good employees nursing homes get by giving them a living wage & benefits.
Starting a union would also help us better vet who we allow to take care of our nursing home residents & provide a layer of protection to limit the lower quality of care typically received in nursing homes today.
